The Allspice also known as Pimento, Jamaica pepper, or Myrtle pepper is an evergreen tropical tree celebrated for its aromatic berries, glossy leaves, and sweet-spicy scent. Native to the Caribbean and Central America, it thrives in warm, humid climates — ideal for tropical gardens or container growing in subtropical regions.
The tree produces small green berries that are harvested while unripe and then dried; once dried, they deliver the distinctive warm spice flavor combining notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The leaves, wood and berries all carry that same aromatic scent and can be used fresh in cooking or smoking meats.
Plant size: Typically 20 – 30+ ft tall (can be grown smaller with pruning or kept in a container).
USDA Zones: 9 – 11
Sun & Soil: Full sun to partial shade, moist to well-drained soil; tolerates heat and humidity.
