Pigeon Pea is a perennial legume related to chickpeas, alfalfa and peanuts. Also known as Thuvarai, Red Gram in India, Arhur or Toor dal in Hindi, Thuvaram Paruppu in Tamil, and as Congo Pea in Africa.
Pigeon peas are an excellent source of protein and additionally provide thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, vitamin A, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium.
Taste: Fresh peas offer a nutty taste and crisp texture, similar to edamame.
