Fig Trees
Fig trees are among the oldest cultivated fruit trees and produce one of nature’s most unusual fruits. What we call a fig is actually a specialized structure containing many tiny flowers inside, which develop into the soft, sweet interior we eat. Fig varieties range from honey-sweet and mild to rich, berry-like flavors, with fruit in shades of green, gold, brown, purple, and nearly black. Many varieties grow well in Florida and can produce abundant fruit on relatively compact trees.
