Ackee is a fruit of the Sapindaceae (soapberry) family, the same family as lychee and longan. It’s also known as acki, akee, or ackee apple. Though technically a fruit, ackee is traditionally cooked and eaten like a vegetable, especially in savory dishes. It is the national fruit of Jamaica and a key ingredient in the island’s iconic dish, ackee and saltfish.
Taste: Delicate, buttery, and slightly nutty when properly cooked. The texture is creamy and tender, often compared to scrambled eggs.
