The Shiranui Mandarin, also known as Dekopon and marketed in the U.S. as Sumo Citrus®, is a premium Japanese hybrid between Ponkan mandarin and Kiyomi tangor. It is easily recognized by its large size and distinctive “topknot” bump. The fruit has a thick, easy-to-peel rind and seedless, juicy flesh with a rich, sweet flavor and low acidity. Highly aromatic and easy to segment, it is considered one of the finest citrus varieties for fresh eating. This upright, productive tree performs well in warm climates and is a standout choice for home gardens.
