The Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa), also called Sweetsop or Anon, is one of the most widely cultivated Annona fruits in the tropics. Native to the Americas but beloved across Asia, the tree produces round to heart-shaped fruit with a bumpy skin. Inside, the creamy, custard-like flesh is divided into segments, each surrounding a glossy black seed. Sugar apples are prized for their intense sweetness and aroma, eaten fresh with a spoon or blended into smoothies and desserts.
Taste: Very sweet, creamy, and custard-like with vanilla and tropical fruits notes.
Fruit size: Small to Medium (3 – 5 inches across, weighing 8–12 oz).
Plant size: 10 – 20 ft tall.
Season: Summer - Early fall
USDA Zones: 9 – 11
Pollination: Flowers are pollinated by beetles; hand-pollination improves fruit set and yield.
Requirements: Prefers full sun, sandy or loamy well-drained soil, and moderate watering. Tolerates drought once established but fruits best with consistent moisture.
