The Painter Vanilla Orchid is a unique Florida-selected cultivar of the true vanilla bean orchid, discovered by John Painter. It is prized for producing extra-large, highly aromatic vanilla beans and for the unusual ability of the original clone to potentially set fruit through natural moth pollination, although hand-pollination is still recommended for the most reliable harvests. This vigorous tropical vine features thick stems, broad dark-green leaves, and elegant greenish-yellow flowers, making it both a beautiful ornamental and a rewarding edible plant.
Vine size: can grow 20 ft long or more per year (can be kept at 8-10 ft long with pruning and container growing)
Bean size: Large (6-10 inches in length)
USDA Zones: 10–11 (Zone 9 with cold protection)
Requirements: Bright, indirect light or 30–50% shade, warm humid conditions, excellent drainage, and a sturdy trellis, moss pole, or living tree for support. Protect from frost.
