Citrus Cocktail Trees
Citrus cocktail trees, also known as fruit salad trees or citrus medley trees, are a fascinating way to grow several types of citrus on a single tree. They are created by grafting multiple scion varieties onto one compatible rootstock, allowing one tree to produce different fruits—such as oranges, lemons, limes, mandarins, or grapefruit. Each grafted branch retains the characteristics of its original variety, creating a living collection of citrus in a surprisingly small amount of space.
How Does a Citrus Cocktail Tree Work?
A citrus cocktail tree is not a hybrid that produces a new type of fruit. Instead, several individual citrus varieties are grafted onto the same tree. Each scion continues to produce the fruit of its own variety, so one branch might grow mandarins while another produces lemons or oranges. Because many citrus varieties are graft-compatible, growers can create interesting combinations with different flavors, colors, and harvest periods all growing from a common root system.
Growing and Maintaining a Multi-Grafted Citrus Tree
One of the most interesting aspects of a multi-grafted citrus tree is that the different varieties may not grow at the same rate. A vigorous branch can eventually dominate slower-growing varieties, so occasional pruning is important to keep the canopy balanced and ensure that each graft receives adequate sunlight. It is also important to watch for shoots emerging from below the grafts, particularly from the rootstock, and remove them. With proper care, a citrus cocktail or fruit salad tree can provide several types of fresh citrus while occupying roughly the space of a single tree.
