Katuk, also known as Sweet leaf, Tropical asparagus, Sayur manis, is a tropical perennial shrub native to Southeast Asia. It is widely grown as a leafy green vegetable and valued for its high nutritional content, mild flavor, and year-round productivity.
Katuk is highly nutritious—rich in protein, vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium—making it an excellent addition to tropical home gardens. It is fast-growing, easy to maintain, and thrives in humid, warm climates. Regular pruning encourages new tender growth and keeps the plant bushy and compact.
Taste: The tender young leaves and shoots are eaten fresh, steamed, or stir-fried, offering a pleasant nutty taste similar to pea shoots or asparagus.
Plant size: 6 – 10 ft tall (easily kept shorter by pruning).
USDA Zones: 9b – 11
Important: Best consumed cooked or in moderation raw. Raw leaves in large amounts can be toxic (linked to lung issues).
