Large Leaf Tea plants belong to Camellia sinensis var. assamica, native to the Assam region of India and other tropical parts of Southeast Asia. Compared to Small Leaf Tea, the leaves are much larger, broader, and thicker. They are commonly used for producing bold black teas and rich pu-erh teas with a stronger, deeper flavor and malty or earthy notes.

Tea leaves contain vitamins C and B6, carotene, thiamine, and folic acid. They also contain potassium, manganese, and fluoride.

Large Leaf Tea thrives in warm, humid climates and performs best in tropical to subtropical regions (Zones 8b–11).
