The Miracle Fruit, also known as Miracle Berry, is a fascinating evergreen shrub native to West Africa. Its small, bright-red berries contain a natural protein called miraculin, which temporarily changes how the taste buds perceive acidic foods—making sour foods such as lemons and limes taste remarkably sweet. The effect typically lasts 15 minutes to about an hour. The plant is slow-growing, attractive, and well suited for container growing in Florida.
Tree size: 6–15 ft tall (easily maintained smaller in a container)
Fruit size: Small, oval berries; approximately ¾–1 inch long
Fruiting season: Can fruit multiple times or nearly year-round in warm conditions
USDA Zones: 10b–11 (container growing with cold protection recommended in cooler areas)
Requirements: Full sun to partial shade, acidic well-drained soil (around pH 4.5–5.5), consistent moisture, and protection from frost.
